I. Your digital identity can help you find a job

What is a digital identity? Have you ever googled your name? If you have ever posted a comment on a discussion group, a wiki or a blog, using your real name, you probably will find some entries. If you have a Facebook, twitter or LinkedIn page, they will be at the top of the Google search list. Companies and employers have a digital identity too. When you try to find more information about vacancies you’re applying for, research a company’s website, their Facebook page, or a LinkedIn page. This can help you decide whether to apply for the job or not.  A potential employer will do exactly the same thing, once they have read your CV.  This is the main reason why you should care about your “digital identity”. But that’s not all.  Even if a CV and cover letter are still essential, more and more people find vacancies through a social web network.

II. The art of speech

You may have had first contact with a potential employer via email or a web network, however the day will come when you’ll be invited to a face-to-face meeting.  This may be a panel interview or an informal interview with a member of their human resources team.  If the idea of a professional interview makes you feel nervous here are some helpful resources which will prepare you for the big day.  Most people can improve their public speaking and presentation skills with training. You can present yourself in twenty words or take one hour to tell the story of your entire professional life.  Start practicing with your friends and family!  Also record and time yourself to make sure you cover the areas you want to. Writing down keywords for each part of your speech is also helpful.  MS PowerPoint can be used to practice your presentation on your professional experience.

III. Interview preparation

The interview is the last step in the application process.  Review the information you collected on vacancies, the employer, and the company.  Create your Job-search folder and collate this information.  If you have had contacts with some employers through social web networks, keep a copy of these messages. IV. Final checklist

A few days before your interview, it may be useful to have a look at your checklist. This will ensure you arrive at the right time, at the right place, on the correct day!  A practice run to see how long it takes to get to the interview place is highly recommended.  Bring along a copy of the letter or email inviting you to the interview so you have the employer’s full name.  Good luck!
